At Jebel Fihrayn, better known as the Edge of the World, the Tuwaiq escarpment breaks off in a sheer wall of rock and looks out over a plain that runs unbroken to the horizon. A cliff that was once a seabed
The Tuwaiq escarpment is limestone, laid down when this part of Arabia lay under a shallow sea. Fossilised shells still turn up in the rock at the base of the cliffs. Over millions of years the plateau lifted and the softer ground below eroded away, leaving the dramatic 300 metre drop that hikers reach today along the old caravan routes that once crossed the plain below.
