The elders in these works belong to the generation that remembers Saudi Arabia before its great transformation: the traders, farmers, pearl divers and bedouin whose lives spanned the founding of the modern Kingdom. Choosing the right size
Scale decides whether a piece looks specified or accidental, and it is where most choices go wrong. Safaya canvases run in two proportion families.
The standard family runs 30x45, 40x60, 60x90, 80x120 and 100x150 cm. Smaller sizes suit a bedroom, a study or a treatment room; 80x120 and 100x150 are the sizes that hold a living room or a meeting room wall.
The panoramic family runs 48x27, 64x36, 96x54, 128x72 and 192x108 cm. At nearly two metres wide, 192x108 is a genuine statement piece, and the wide proportion is made for the long wall above a sofa, a bed, a reception desk or a banquette run, where a tall canvas would look stranded.
A reliable rule: the piece should occupy about two thirds of the width of the wall or the furniture beneath it, hung with its centre at eye level. Where one canvas cannot cover that span, two or three at even spacing will, and a composed set often reads better up close than a single oversized image.
Portraits in a commercial space
Portraits behave differently from landscapes in a public interior, and they reward being placed deliberately. A single face at scale carries enormous presence, so it belongs where people pause: a reception wall, the head of a boardroom, a lounge, a gallery run along a corridor. It is usually a mistake to scatter portraits across an open-plan floor, where they compete with each other.
