Far to the south, off the coast of Jazan, the Farasan Islands scatter across the Red Sea: a coral archipelago of around eighty islands, protected for its marine life and largely untouched by crowds. Mangroves, clear lagoons, migratory birds and the rare Farasan gazelle make it one of the Kingdom's quiet natural treasures.

A protected archipelago

The Farasan Islands form a protected area prized for coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove stands that shelter turtles, dolphins and vast flocks of migratory birds. The islands also carry a long human story: Ottoman-era coral-stone houses, the ornate Al Najdi mosque and the old pearl-diving heritage that once tied Farasan to the wider Gulf trade. Every year the islands hold a gathering around the arrival of the hareed fish, a tradition centuries old.

Choosing the right size

Scale decides whether a piece looks specified or accidental, and it is where most choices go wrong. Safaya canvases run in two proportion families.

The standard family runs 30x45, 40x60, 60x90, 80x120 and 100x150 cm. Smaller sizes suit a bedroom, a study or a treatment room; 80x120 and 100x150 are the sizes that hold a living room or a meeting room wall.

The panoramic family runs 48x27, 64x36, 96x54, 128x72 and 192x108 cm. At nearly two metres wide, 192x108 is a genuine statement piece, and the wide proportion is made for the long wall above a sofa, a bed, a reception desk or a banquette run, where a tall canvas would look stranded.

A reliable rule: the piece should occupy about two thirds of the width of the wall or the furniture beneath it, hung with its centre at eye level. Where one canvas cannot cover that span, two or three at even spacing will, and a composed set often reads better up close than a single oversized image.

Farasan in a commercial space

Open, sunlit water is the most reliably calming subject there is, which makes Farasan a natural specification for spaces designed to slow people down: waiting rooms, treatment rooms, spa and wellness areas, hotel suites, quiet lounges.

The soft aqua and pale gold palette is gentle enough to fill several rooms without becoming repetitive, and light enough not to darken a room that is already low-lit. In a clinic or a hotel with many identical rooms, a matching series of Farasan pieces gives the floor a coherent identity while keeping each room restful.

Canvas also suits these interiors practically: it is light to mount on partition walls, and a frameless or matte-framed piece throws less glare than glazed artwork under downlighting.

There is a hospitality argument too. Farasan is one of the least photographed parts of the Kingdom, so a guest who recognises it tends to ask about it, and a guest who does not still reads it as somewhere real rather than stock imagery.
