AlUla in Canvas: Saudi Art for Your Walls
AlUla is where Saudi Arabia keeps its deepest history. In this oasis valley in the northwest, sandstone canyons hold the tombs of Hegra, the Kingdom's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, carved by the Nabataeans more than two thousand years ago. Hegra, once known as Madain Salih, is the best preserved Nabataean city after Petra: monumental tombs cut straight into freestanding sandstone outcrops, their facades still crisp after two millennia. Nearby, Jabal Ikmah is often called an open library for the hundreds of ancient inscriptions on its walls, and Elephant Rock, Jabal AlFil, is a natural sandstone arch weathered into the unmistakable shape of an elephant.
Then there is Maraya, the concert hall clad entirely in mirrors, recognised as the largest mirrored building in the world.
